The Beech Grove High School Athletic Department would like to welcome Coach David Sanders as the school’s new boys’ varsity basketball coach. Moving up from his JV and assistant varsity basketball coaching roles, Sanders is excited to get started and put his stamp on a program that means so much to him. “BG is home! I see this as an amazing opportunity to build on what Coach Males and Coach English set the foundation for,” said Sanders. As a player and 2008 Beech Grove graduate, David Sanders played varsity basketball under Coach Randy Males. His team claimed a sectional championship that year breaking a 16-year drought. Fourteen years later in 2022, David Sanders returned to Beech Grove to coach the 8th grade boys’ basketball team where they got to see the varsity program win a state championship. The next year he moved up as the JV head coach, leading them to a 17-5 record, while assisting the varsity team who made it to semi-state. Our current varsity players know Coach Sanders very well. The players have worked with Coach Sanders and know what to expect moving forward. Future players under Coach Sanders will become well-versed in his four pillars of The Hornet Culture. These pillars include accountability, discipline, toughness, and family. Sanders is committed to teaching life lessons through the game of basketball. He stated that the goal is not only to make them better basketball players. He hopes the time spent in his program will contribute to their success well after they graduate high school. Even before his promotion, Coach Sanders could be found in the gym leading morning workouts. Teaming up with the girls’ basketball coach, Amy Selk, the two are providing workout opportunities for youth players on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Last week they had over 30 kids in the gym working on skill development. Wasting no time, Coach Sanders also has his players working on conditioning, weights, and skill development three times a week after school. We are excited to name Coach David Sanders as the head varsity basketball coach of the Beech Grove Hornets. We wish him the best of luck as he begins to develop his program.
