Beech Grove’s winter season athletics finished up last week, the end of the 9 weeks is this Friday,and spring break is just around the corner. While some students are busy packing for spring break, our spring athletes are training and gearing up for their respective sports. Before we move onto spring sports we should take a moment to reflect on all the success Beech Grove athletics had over the winter season! Below is a break down of each teams accomplishments for the winter seasons.
The boys swim team had a very successful season winning the ICC and Beech Grove invitational. Eight swimmers were selected for all conference: Vilis Vusklans, Randy Gindling, Janis Vuskalns, Brent Strahla, Jack Ulery, Tyler Gallagher, Caleb Bowser, and Pat Mckenzie. Vilis Vuskalns also broke a record that stood for 20 years by foreign exchange student Canonico in the 200 yard individual medley with the time of 2:04.6. Vilis set the new record with a time of 2:03.71.
The wrestling team sent Ethan Smiley to the IHSAA state finals for the 2nd year in a row and he wrestled his way to an 8th place finish. Ethan also was an ICC champion. Other wrestlers who made some noise this year are Bailey Moore (semi-state), Nate Sanchez (regionals, and ICC runner-up), Isaiah Green (regionals), Eli Shockley (ICC runner-up), Damian Trass (ICC runner-up), Walter Ballinger (ICC runner-up), and Adam Perra (ICC runner-up).
The Lady Hornets basketball team finished 13-11 under first year coach Kristin Raker. The team finished 2nd place in conference with a 6-1 record. Sophomores Katie Giller and Cameron Cardenas were named all conference. Katie Giller was also named Underclass Honorable Mention All-State by Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
The boys basketball team finished the season with a 13-10 record and finished 2nd place in conference with a 6-1 record. The boys got off to a slow start by finished strong during a stretch where they won seven games in a row. That’s the longest win streak in the past 8 seasons. Juniors Chase Andries and Dylan Allen, along with sophomore Kenny Washington were named all conference. The Hornets won the 1st annual New Palestine Invitational by defeating New Pal and Tri-West.
The Lady Hornets swim team had the highest numbers of swimmers on the team in the past four seasons. They were the Beech Grove invitational runners’ up. The 50 Free & 100 Free were won by Erika Leak, and the 200 Free Relay team of Erika Leak, Caitlin Bowser, Nicole Allen, and Lizzie Strahla were also event champions. Freshman Alexis Snead was the ICC champion of the 100 Butterfly.
The BGHS cheer team were ICC runners’s up during their competitive cheer competition that they spent months training and practicing for. This is the highest the team has placed at the competitive event. The cheerleading team also brought the cheer spirit on a nightly basis for all girls and boys basketball games.
The winter season athletics awards banquet is Tuesday, March 15th. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided by the HIVE (Hornets Involved in Varsity Events – Parent Athletics Booster Club). Freshman are in charge of bringing drinks, sophomores bring desserts, juniors bring side dishes, and seniors bring fruits. Dinner for the event is for athletes only from 5:45-6:30. At 6:30 athletic director Matt English will begin the awards programs for all sports. Around 6:50 teams will separate into different parts of the buildings for their teams’ awards.
