Today marks the full start to our fall athletics program…and of course it is raining!
Our girls golf team got started about two weeks ago and they are showing steady improvement, with wins last week over Heritage Christian and Lawrence Central. According to Coach Ringham the girls have struggled to find consistency early, but once they hit their stride she believes they can be formidable.
At some point this week all of our other fall sports programs will be in action (Weather permitting). You can find a full listing of events, times, and locations below.
Our fall sports teams enter the season with very high expectations; Each program has worked enthusiastically to get to this point, and I’m sure they are ready for their contest seasons. Unless you have a child involved in sports, or have inside knowledge of athletics, you might be surprised how much time our athletes spend at school over the summer break. There is weight lifting 3-4 times a week, skill sessions 3-4 times each week, plus team workouts and practices multiple times each week. Daily throughout the summer you could find athletes of all types in and around building; starting as early as 6 am and lasting until 9 or 10 pm many evenings.
The commitment and dedication of our athletes and coaches is an awesome thing!
A Couple of Special Notes for the Fall Season:
1. We have 3 defending conference champions in action this week: Football, boys cross country, girls golf
2. We have a new womens’ soccer coach: Michael Shanahan; Michael teaches at BGMS; his debut with the womens team will be tonight.
3. An exciting development in mens’ and womens’ soccer: We have enough athletes on both teams to field a JV team for both programs. This is exciting news and hopefully bodes well for the future!
4. Friday evening is our first home football game of the season; Making the night even more exciting is the fact that game will be sponsored by the National Guard; they will be on hand with a variety of games and activities and they are also providing jerseys for our team to wear during the gameFriday. Additionally, the National Guard will be on hand for the playing of the National Anthem before the game; as our BGHS marching band plays the anthem, about 30-35 of our students will be on the field, holding the super-sized flag provided by the National Guard.
As you can see, it is a very exciting time for BGHS Athletics!
As always, best of luck to all of our coaches, athletes and teams! GO HORNETS..we wish the best to all of you and we hope that your hard work and dedication is paid off in a big way!
