Game Recap
The Beech Grove Hornets defeated the Pike Red Devils Monday by the score of 6-5 in 9 innings. The extra inning affair was the first for the Hornets this season. Pike tied the game in the 7th inning, after Beech Grove got out to a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the 9th, the Hornets started the inning off with a line drive single by Nic Ancelet and ended it with an RBI walk-off walk from Jordan Reel.
Seniors Tyler Griffith and Kole Aping combined for 8 strikeouts on the mound for Beech Grove, with Griffith throwing the first 6 innings and Aping coming in for the final 3 innings, picking up his 3rd win in a row. Defensively, the Hornets were led by Sophomores Jaylin Mitchell and Nic Ancelet. Mitchell had 3 putouts and 4 assists at 2nd base, including a big double play to end the 7th inning. Behind the plate, Ancelet threw out 3 of 4 base stealers to shut down Pike on the bases.
Offensively, Aping paced Beech Grove with 2 hits, including an early 2-RBI single up the middle Austin Kazee, Gavin Hess, Griffith, Ancelet, and Reel each added hits for Beech Grove. Jalen Romine and Ancelet each scored 2 runs on the night as well.
The win is the 5th of the season for the Hornets, bringing their record to 5-11. Next up is the final conference game of the season when the Lutheran Saints come to Sarah T. Bolton Park on Tuesday night for a 5:30 PM start.
