Good morning everyone and best wishes on a successful, short week! I wanted to share with you some outstanding performances from our BGHS athletes over the weekend:
- The girls basketball team improved to 8-1 by thrashing ICC rival Park Tudor by a score of 79-43. Leading the way for the Lady Hornets were seniors Cameron Cardenas (28 pts) and Katie Giller (23 pts, 12 rebounds). Sophomore Neasia Lee chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds. The girls have a big week coming up: Wednesday evening the girls host ICC opponent Cardinal Ritter; this will be an important game in the race for the conference title; JV tips off at 6 pm Wednesday. Friday night the girls travel to sectional foe Danville for another big game; At various times this season, both BG and Danville have been ranked in the state 3A polls.
Senior – Katie Giller scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds over the weekend against Park Tudor.
- Boys wrestling participated in the Marion County tournament over the weekend: Leading the charge for the boys was senior Ethan Smiley (126lbs). Ethan joined a very select group of accomplished wrestlers by winning his 3rd Marion County title of his career! Ethan did it in style Saturday, pinning the reigning state champion in the finals! Also placing well over the weekend were seniors Bailey Moore (3rd–138) and Isaiah Greene (5th–Hvywt), as well as sophomore Harley Taylor (5th-132 lbs).
Ethan Smily is a 3-time Marion County Champion.
- Boys basketball also had a good weekend: Friday night the varsity boys improved to 5-0 by defeating Lapel by a score of 62-51. Leading the way for the Hornets was senior Kenny Washington with 17 pts: Juniors Gavin Hess (14 pts, 6 rebounds) and Griffin Wade (13 pts) were also integral to the win. The JV boys also improved to 5-0 Friday with their win over Lapel. Saturday morning, the freshman boys basketball team traveled to Batesville for an invitational tournament; The boys defeated Batesville in the first round 40-30; In the championship round the boys downed Shelbyville by a score of 42-34. The freshman boys are now 6-0 for the season!
