One of the many spring sports in full swing is softball. The team is coming off a struggle of a season last year but are extremely motivated to improve this spring. There have been workouts going on as early as last summer and fall in preparation for this season.

When asked about how this year’s team compares to last year’s, coach Lois Speziale responded, “So far, this team is younger, but overall we have a good game knowledge. I feel as though we are more athletic and have girls that are committed to making BGHS softball go to the next level. We have several players that are versatile, and that makes it easier to make changes to the lineup and help us win more games this year.”

Coach Speziale said the team is looking to win the conference as well as county. As for longer term goals she said, “Our long term goal is to win sectionals, and keep winning after that to make it to state. But a sectional win is where we have to begin.”

The team this year has a strong mix of returning veteran players and young new talent. Seniors Reecie Gilliam and Mallory Storms will provide varsity experience and leadership. They also have some strong underclassmen coming up to the varsity team. Speziale said of the young members, “Those players are very athletic and have a natural ability when it comes to the game of softball.” Some of those new players she is excited about include Caley Johnson, Tia O’Connor, and Quinn Johnson.

The weather has been quite uncooperative this spring so the first few games have been postponed.  However, the girls should be in action on Thursday and Friday in away games against Greenwood High School and Greenfield High School.  Come check them out at home on Monday, April 16th.
