Matt English began his career with Beech Grove High School in August 2008 as a classroom teacher, and became the school’s athletic director in July of 2012, the position he currently holds. Early on, Matt emphasized his belief in the motto, “We Before Me.”
It is no secret that Matt loves basketball. However, he loves his students who play basketball even more! He wants his “boys” to not only win games, but to win at life. He has often expressed his wish that when his players go out into the world, he wants them to be the best men they can be, the best friend they can be, the best father they can be, the best husband they can be, whether they go on to college and play basketball, or stay close to home and start a career or family. Matt believes that, for his basketball players, when they step foot on the BGHS basketball court, “the journey begins here.” This is where Coach wants them to not only learn how to play a great game of basketball, but where he wants to start to teach them about life. And, that is exactly what happens, beginning with the first time his basketball players step out on the court to play basketball for Coach English.
Dr. Kaiser displays the drawing of the proposed gym floor at the school board meeting in the photo below. One side of the court will read, “We before Me” and the other side will read, “The Journey Begins Here.” Both sides of the court will feature Coach’s signature.
At the September 11 School Board meeting, the Board voted to name the Beech Grove High School gym floor in honor of Coach English. We love you, Coach!
