The girls basketball season is ramping up as the girls have put five games under their belt. The team has lost some big play makers in Cameron Cardenas and Katie Giller who are playing with Katie Gearlds at Marion University. Even with a younger team and some new faces to the BGHS program, Coach Raker is hoping to surprise some teams this year and make a respectable showing in the conference.
When asked about the team’s goals this year Coach Raker said, “We are focusing on a winning record and building our key fundamentals every game…girls have worked very hard over the summer and pre-season to prepare for our winter season.”
Returning varsity players Romea Echols and Mya Crawford are stepping up as more vocal team leaders helping their fellow teammates learn the offense and defense. In addition, Alexianna Blakely is stepping up in the post as a valuable addition to the team. Coach Raker stressed the importance of focusing on the basics. She stated, “We are really focusing on basic skills and fundamentals with our teams this year. We have a lot of young players and new players to our high school program. We have been breaking our offense down into drills to help the players develop the footwork needed to shoot, drive, and pass.” By concentrating on getting the little things right, Coach Raker is hoping to develop better, more confident, and more aggressive players.
Ultimately the program is hoping to build players who can work through adversity and learn important life lessons through the game of basketball. Raker said, “Our girls will learn the importance of being a “team player” and understand how life is full of opportunities if you believe in yourself and one another. Sports truly open doors and expose a work ethic that can transfer into a life full of success.”
We wish the girls good luck this season and look forward to seeing a large crowd at their next home game:
