Hornets News · IndyStar Sports Award Winners

This past Sunday the Indianapolis Star hosted its annual sports awards ceremony at Clowes Memorial Hall on Butler’s campus.  We are thrilled to announce that the Beech Grove boys basketball program received two awards.  The team, as a whole, was awarded the Indianapolis Colts Top Team Fan Vote.  Over 6,000 votes had been placed as the top three teams went into the awards night as finalist.  It was a special moment for the team, and the Beech Grove supporters in the crowd, when the IndyStar called Beech Grove as the Top Team (Fan Vote) winner.  Athletic Director Garret Daniel said, “It was really special because the Beech Grove section in attendance was loud-and-proud.  It was a great moment for the boys on the team receiving the award.”

In another exciting moment, Coach Mike Renfro was awarded as Coach of the Year.  It was a proud moment for Coach Renfro who took over as interim head coach for Coach English as his health began to decline.  Renfro coached through a difficult season after losing Coach English.  Renfro and the coaching staff were able to keep the team focused on their goal and rallied the players to a sectional title and onward to the regional final game against Crispus Attucks.  Just this past month Renfro was officially hired on as head varsity coach and will continue to lead the team as they gear up for next season.
