This past Saturday BGHS wrestling competed in sectional matches at Southport High School. The team advanced six wrestlers on to regional competition. This was the most wrestlers to move out of sectionals since 2011 when Beech Grove advanced seven athletes. The following wrestlers will compete this Saturday at Perry Meridian High School starting at 9:00 am.
- 113 lb Carlos Avila
- 132 lb Ethan Thompson
- 138 lb Phenix Carney
- 145 lb Harley Taylor
- 170 lb Jacob Skinner
- 285 lb Jack Broadwell
The team as a whole placed 4th out of 10 teams. The top three teams were all state-ranked and Coach Williams was pleased with the team’s effort. Williams recognizes he has a young and tenacious team and he wants to set a precedent of advancing 8-10 wrestlers out of sectionals each year.
The way that wrestling tournament competition works is that the top four wrestlers in a weight class advance. If you lose your first match you are done. Winning your first match guarantees and advancement but you continue to wrestle for top placement. We wish our student-athletes luck as they work to keep their season going.
