This evening the girls basketball team will head to Speedway to compete in their sectional tournament. The Lady Hornets will take on Herron High School in the second game (Game 4) of the evening. The anticipated start time is at approximately 8:00 pm. After talking with Coach Wiese, she is proud of the way her players have approached this season. With all of the obstacles and restrictions, they have followed the safety and health protocols and remained healthy throughout the season. In addition, Coach Wiese mentioned that the girls continue to show up ready to work with a focus on improvement. The players ask questions and have worked together as a team. She has felt this building with each practice and thinks the team will have their best games in the sectional tournament.
During a season that has seen limited spectators, it has been hard to play off of the enthusiasm that builds from a big crowd. The absence of fans is something you can definitely feel when you are out on the court. Coach Wiese said, “We have really had to hold our bench and coaching staff accountable this season to be our hype and to keep the energy going all four quarters.” The team will need to make sure they bring that same energy to sectionals tonight to supplement the smaller crowds. Leading the team on the court will be senior starters Tia O’Connor and exchange student Marion Soller from France. Marion came to Beech Grove with very little basketball experience and has worked her way up to a varsity starter and contributor. The team also has support from freshman starter Malone Moore, and junior starters Sam Warrener and Krystina Sorenson.
Sometimes wins and losses don’t tell the whole story of a team’s journey through their season. If you read between the lines of this team there is growth, dedication, and a willingness to keep their head up and focus on improving. At this point in the year, many programs are just thankful they can continue to compete, and Coach Wiese is proud that her team has been able to stay healthy and make it through an entire season. The Lady Hornets can look forward to a competitive sectional tournament as they hope to extend their season even more.
