Zach Smith’s 15 points led the way for the Beech Grove Hornets as they captured the New Year’s Holiday Tournament with a come-from-behind 62-42 win over the Tri-West Bruins in the championship game Thursday afternoon at Decatur Central’s 5,200-seat “Hawks Nest.”
Trailing 13-6 in the early going, the Hornets rallied, outscoring the Bruins 23-9 to take a 29-22 lead at the intermission.
Besides Smith’s season-high 15 points, Beech Grove got balanced scoring throughout most of its roster. Keyonni Johnson, Donovan Bailey and Jadyn Curry scored eight points each while both Kaleb Arsenault and Seth Walters added seven. Isaac Stennett, who scored 14 in the semifinal win over New Palestine, poured in six points as Coach Jason Hess’ Hornets improved to 8-0.
The Hornets, who captured the New Year’s Holiday Tourney for the third straight year, will host Monrovia this Saturday night in an Indiana Crossroads Conference matchup on the Matt English Court at “The Hive.” Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
