Junior quarterback Gavin Mitchell completed 7-of-13 passes for a season-high 229 yards and three touchdowns as the Beech Grove Hornets downed Indiana Crossroads Conference crosstown rival Speedway 21-13 Friday night at Beech Grove’s TCU Veterans Stadium. Two of Mitchell’s scoring aerials went to senior Donovan Bailey, who outran the Speedway defenders for a 71-yard score in the second quarter and turned on the afterburners for a 64-yard TD jaunt in the third period, giving the Hornets (2-1, 2-1 in the ICC) a 21-10 lead. Bailey was the star of the game, doing a nice job punting and returning punts and kickoffs in addition to his offensive exploits and playing tremendous defense. The senior had three receptions for 146 yards and close to 200 all-purpose yards for the night.
After a scoreless first period, Beech Grove drew first blood when Mitchell completed a 29-yard toss to sophomore Damon Thompkins to give the Hornets a 7-0 advantage.
Sophomore Reis Walker had a one-yard touchdown run and senior kicker Ben Zore booted two field goals (37 and 20 yards) for the Sparkplugs (1-2, 0-2 in the ICC).
Friday night’s victory was the 300th in the 81-year football program history of Beech Grove High School (300 wins, 448 losses, 11 ties, a .403 winning percentage). It was also the sixth straight win against Speedway, who last defeated the Hornets 37-19 during the 2013 season (Beech Grove won six consecutive times versus the Sparkplugs from 1985-1990).
The Hornets will look for their third straight win of the 2019 season when they face the unbeaten Scecina Crusaders (3-0) at Manual’s Ray Schultz Athletic Field next Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
