Sophomore Damonte Henderson scored 18 points as the Beech Grove Hornets drilled the Greenfield-Central Cougars 66-37 in the season opener Tuesday night on the Matt English Court at “The Hive.” Henderson got scoring support from classmate Damon Thompkins with 12 points, sophomore Troy Heckathorne with 11 and freshman Jeremiah Alexander with eight.

After spotting a 5-0 Cougar lead to open the game, the Hornets went on an 11-0 run to take control of the game and give new junior varsity head coach Larry Williams his first victory. Leading by just 40-27 after three quarters, Beech Grove salted this one away by burying the visiting Cougars 26-10 in the final period to make the final margin 66-37.

Will VanDuyn, Joey Roland and Tyler Kerkhof led Greenfield-Central (0-1) with eight points each.

The Hornets won’t be back in action until next Friday night, when the Speedway Sparkplugs come calling to “The Hive” for the Indiana Crossroads Conference opener. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Beech Grove has now won 41 of its last 42 games in junior varsity play.
