Senior Gavin Mitchell picked up a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Beech Grove Hornets defeated the Triton Central Tigers 58-38 in an Indiana Crossroads Conference clash Friday night on the Matt English Court at “The Hive.”
Mitchell, who made five field goals and was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, had a nice all-around game, garnering two steals and dishing out three assists in addition to his point and rebounding totals. Sophomore Cam Brown poured in 14 points on four field goals and 4-of-4 firing from the foul line and also collected three rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Beech Grove (13-5, 5-2 in the ICC) was a decent 21 for 47 (.447) from the field, including 3-of-9 from behind the three-point arc. The visiting Tigers (9-8, 2-3 in the ICC) were a frosty 12 for 33 (.364) from the floor and made just 3 of 17 shots from three-point land.
Triton Central had two stretches of time in which it didn’t score: Five minutes and 51 seconds (from the 4:38 mark of the second quarter to the 6:47 mark of the third period) and the contest’s final three minutes and 46 seconds. Those scoreless stretches proved costly for the team in kelly green and white.
Junior forward Aiden Lindsey led Triton Central with a game-high 17 points. He also corralled six rebounds and blocked a pair of Beech Grove shots. Senior guard David Steele dropped in 10 points, grabbed eight boards and picked up two steals.
Senior Jadyn Curry added six points and dished out a game-high six assists while sophomore Jeremiah Tate, seeing his first action in a month, came off the bench to tally six points for the Hornets, who wrapped up conference play with five wins and two losses.
Winners of two straight, Beech Grove traveled to Russiaville, IN to face Western High School in a late Saturday afternoon contest. Look for the story on that particular contest on the Beech Grove Hornets Athletics website.
