Friday night the Hornets beat Cardinal Ritter for only the second time in school history. The team overcame almost 100 yards in penalties to take the 49-28 victory.
Terrice Pope got the scoring started on Beech Grove’s first play from scrimmage with a 61 yard touchdown run. He would end up with 104 yards rushing and one touchdown. Sergio Hulse lead the team in rushing once again. He put up 160 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns. The team rushed for a total of 334 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns behind one of the strongest offensive lines Beech Grove has had in a long time. Tabor, Dale, Smock, Fryar, Comodo & Cailey also protected Jordan Reel, who connected on two touchdown passes. The first was a short pass to Kyion Tyler, who broke two tackles, and raced 60 yards for the score, the other was a great grab by Donovan Bailey in the endzone for a 39 yard touchdown.
Freshman…that’s right, Freshman, Julian Lopez found himself getting a lot of playing time Friday night. He forced a fumble, then recovered it in the first half. He then recovered a muffed punt in the second half. Hulse had a strong performance on special teams with a couple of two point conversions and a 39 yard punt return.
The Hornets will finish up conference play next week with another tough game vs the 6-1 Triton Central Tigers.
