Despite a late rally by the host New Castle Trojans, the Beech Grove Junior Varsity Hornets kept their unbeaten record intact with a 54-48 triumph Thursday night at the New Castle Fieldhouse.
Beech Grove, which led 33-17 early in the third quarter, saw its huge lead whittled down to three points (44-41) in the fourth quarter before hanging on to improve to 13-0.
Juniors Keyonni Johnson and Kaleb Arsenault led Coach Jason Hess’ Hornets with 13 points each. Sophomore Edward Taylor scored eight points while junior Donovan Bailey and sophomore Zach Smith each added seven.
The JV Hornets have now won 34 consecutive games over the past two seasons (finished 21-0 last year). Their last defeat came February 24, 2017 when Whiteland downed the Orange and Black 52-44 in the regular-season finale at “The Hive.”
Beech Grove will renew its acquaintance with longtime rival Roncalli this Saturday afternoon as the Rebels pay a visit to the Matt English Court at “The Hive” for a 1 p.m tipoff.
