The Lady Hornets basketball season has officially begun, and we are so excited to see what they can accomplish this season. Adding to the anticipation of the season, the IHSAA is celebrating 50 years of women's basketball in the state of Indiana. As we watch our women's basketball program thrive from its youth league up to the varsity level, it may feel like it has always been this way. Even though 50 years may sound like a long time, it took many decades for women's sports to get a foothold in high school athletics. According to our yearbook records, Beech Grove High School has had a girls' basketball team as a club through the Girls Athletic Association (G.A.A.) since the 1950s. The G.A.A. was founded in 1927 to promote physical fitness for girls, but it wasn't until the adoption of Title IX in 1972 that the number of female athletes in schools began to surge. The IHSAA had its first women's basketball state tournament in 1976. Warsaw High School claimed the first state title. Twenty-seven years later Beech Grove High School would be crowned 3A state champions led by Katie Gearlds. Motivated by her senior leaders and squad of young talent, Coach Amy Selk is ready to bust through the sectional tournament and see where this team can go. The Lady Hornets basketball team will play their first home game on Tuesday, November 19th against Lutheran. Let's pack the gym to celebrate our Hornets and 50 years of women's basketball in the IHSAA.
